South Korean shares end higher as Samsung Electronics jumps

• KOSPI rises, foreigners net sellers
• Korean won strengthens against dollar
• South Korea benchmark bond yield falls

(Reuters) - Round-up of South Korean financial markets:
** South Korean shares rose on Thursday, as chipmaker Samsung Electronics jumped on announcing a deal with Apple, while peer SK Hynix shrugged off U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats.
** The benchmark KOSPI added 29.54 points, or 0.92%, to close at 3,227.68.
** Trump said the U.S. will impose a tariff of about 100% on semiconductor imports but offered a big exemption, saying the duty won't apply to companies that are manufacturing in the U.S. or have committed to do so.
** South Korea's top trade envoy, Yeo Han-koo, said Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will be exempt from the 100% tariff on chips. The country will face the most favourable rates under its deal with Washington, he added.
** Samsung Electronics rose 2.47%, also buoyed by its deal with Apple to supply chips from its production plant in Austin, Texas, for Apple products including iPhones. Peer SK Hynix gained 1.35%.
** Hyundai Motor rose 0.95% after outlining its plans with General Motors to develop five vehicles together, as they seek to lower costs amid growing competition from nimble Chinese rivals.
** Of the total 935 traded issues, 459 advanced and 409 declined.
** Foreigners were net sellers of shares worth 17 billion won ($12.3 million).
** The won was quoted at 1,381.2 per dollar on the onshore settlement platform, 0.38% higher than Wednesday's close of 1,386.4.
** In the money and debt markets, September futures on three-year treasury bonds gained 0.06 point to 107.44.
** The most liquid three-year Korean treasury bond yield fell 2.0 basis points to 2.407%, while the benchmark 10-year yield shed 0.7 basis point to 2.773%. ($1 = 1,380.2700 won)
