Japan's Nikkei Stock Average is flat at 42615.09 as gains in financial stocks help offset losses in chemical shares.
Dai-ichi Life Holdings is up 2.3% and Japan Post Bank is 2.3% higher after stronger-than-expected domestic inflation data raise hopes for the Bank of Japan's rate increases. Meanwhile, Mitsui Chemicals is down 2.7% and Sekisui Chemical is 2.4% lower.
USD/JPY is at 148.36, compared with 147.51 as of Thursday's Tokyo stock market close.
Investors will be focusing on any domestic political developments as well as Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole symposium later Friday.
