The Australian sharemarket has opened flat

The Australian sharemarket has opened flat on Tuesday as strong gains by Coles and a modest rebound in the banks offset broad falls following overall weaker sentiment on Wall Street as investors await more insight from policymakers.
The S&P/ASX 200 Index was down 34.50 points, or 0.4 per cent to 8937.90 at 10.52am AEST with four of the 11 index sectors higher.
Consumer staples was the strongest as Coles soared 7.9 per cent as it posted a 1.8 per cent lift in 2025 sales to $44.49 billion underpinned by its supermarket network, boosting its bottom line to $1.18 billion.
After the major banks weighed on Monday, Commonwealth Bank gained 0.7 per cent, National Australia Bank by 0.3 per cent and Westpac 0.2 per cent. ANZ fell 0.1 per cent.
Materials were the main drag on the sector as Fortescue Metals dropped 3 per cent as it cut dividends to the lowest level in seven years following a 41 per cent drop in profit. BHP was down 0.9 per cent and Rio Tinto by 0.6 per cent.
Stocks in focus
In company news, petrol and diesel supplier Viva Energy fell 3.3 per cent as it reported a 67.4 per cent slump in first-half benchmark profits, hit by weak refining margins, a shutdown outage and lower fuel margins in its convenience business.
AUB Group rallied 5.1 per cent following a 17 per cent rise in underlying net profit to $200.2 million for the 2025 fiscal year. Reported profit rose to $180.1 million from $137.1 million.
Tyro Payments dived 4.6 per cent as it reported a 4.4 per cent increase in gross profit, but net profit after tax fell by 30 per cent in the year to June 30 compared to the previous year.
Web Travel fell 3.7 per cent despite telling investors that its WebBeds business is on track for a record year, with total transaction value (TTV) for the first half of 2026 expected to exceed $3.1 billion, up from $2.6 billion in the prior corresponding period.
