Canada Employment Hits 3-Year Low

Canada’s employment fell by 66,000 (-0.3%) in August 2025, marking the steepest decline since January 2022, following a 40,800 drop in the previous month, and sharply missing forecasts for a 7,500 gain. Losses were concentrated in part-time positions (-60,000; -1.5%), while full-time employment was little changed after a drop in July. By industry, the largest declines were in professional, scientific and technical services (-26,000; -1.3%), transportation and warehousing (-23,000; -2.1%), and manufacturing (-19,000; -1.0%), partly offset by gains in construction (+17,000; +1.1%). Regionally, employment fell most in Ontario (-26,000; -0.3%), British Columbia (-16,000; -0.5%), and Alberta (-14,000; -0.6%). The employment rate dropped 0.2 percentage points to 60.5%, extending its downward trend.
