Estonian Trade Gap Largest in Nearly 3 Years

Estonia’s trade deficit widened to EUR 443.8 million in July 2025, marking the largest shortfall since December 2022, from EUR 368 million in the corresponding period month of the previous year, as imports rose more than exports. Year-on-year, imports advanced by 11% to EUR 1,871 million, driven by higher purchases from both EU countries (9%) and non-EU countries (23%). Arrivals went up for articles of plastics and rubber (49%), machinery and mechanical appliances (21%), and plastics and rubber (16%). Meanwhile, exports rose by 9% to EUR 1,428 million, driven by higher shipments to EU countries (14%), despite a decline to non-EU countries (-4%). Among commodities, notable increases were seen in mineral products (49%), transport equipment (26%), and electrical equipment (11%). Considering the January-July period, the country recorded a EUR 2,221 million trade shortfall, widening from a EUR 1,977 million gap in the corresponding period a year earlier.
