UK Payroll Employment Falls 8K in August

The number of payrolled employees in the United Kingdom decreased by 8 thousand to 30.3 million in August 2025, following a revised 6 thousand drop in the previous month. This marked the seventh consecutive monthly decline. Compared to the same month last year, payrolled employment fell by 0.4% or 127 thousand, with the largest decrease seen in the accommodation and food service activities sector (-90 thousand). Across regions, Westminster recorded the biggest fall in payrolled employees (-2.9%), while Mid Ulster saw the highest increase (+1.3%). Meanwhile, the median monthly pay rose by 6.6% year-on-year to £2,568. Annual growth in median pay was the highest in the health and social work sector (11.0%), while the lowest was in the professional, scientific and technical sector (3.3%).
