Passenger car registrations in the European Union climbed by 5.3% yoy to 677,786 units in August 2025, following a 7.4% gain in July. This marked the 2nd consecutive month of growth, mainly driven by increases in three of the EU's four largest markets: Spain (17.2%), Germany (5.0%), and France (2.2%). Conversely, registrations in Italy declined by 2.7%. In the battery electric vehicle (BEV) segment, registrations jumped by 30.2%, boosted particularly by a 160.8% surge in Spain. Significant gains were also recorded in Germany (45.7%) and France (29.3%). By contrast, registrations in the Netherlands fell by 3.8%. Year-to-date, total EU car registrations edged down by 0.1%. However, BEV sales advanced by 12.6% to 1.13 million units, accounting for 15.8% of the EU market. Three of the four largest BEV markets—Germany (39.2%), Belgium (14.4%), and the Netherlands (5.1%)—collectively accounted for 62% of total BEV registrations. In contrast, France saw a 2.0% decline in BEV registrations.
