Wall Street stocks opened lower on Thursday, extending a pullback after a string of records as markets look ahead to key inflation data.
"We're seeing some profit taking as we head into the end of the month and into the end of the quarter," said Adam Sarhan of 50 Park Investments.
After finishing at records on Monday, major indices have fallen the last two sessions. Sarhan described pullbacks as "normal and healthy" after a heady period.
About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.5 percent at 45,888.89.
The broad-based S&P 500 dropped 0.9 percent to 6,575.58, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index shed 1.4 percent to 22,194.00.
Data released Thursday showed US economic growth in the second quarter came in at 3.8 percent, up from the 3.3 percent previously estimated.
Markets are looking ahead to Friday's personal consumption price index, an important input for Federal Reserve monetary policy decisions.
Among individual companies, Starbucks dipped 0.4 percent as it announced it would cut about 900 jobs and shutter some underperforming stores as part of a cost-cutting drive.
Citigroup declined 1.3 percent after announcing the sale of 25 percent of its Banamex Mexican subsidiary to Mexican tycoon Fernando Chico Pardo for $2.3 billion.
