(MT Newswires) -- Japanese shares closed higher Tuesday after Sanae Takaichi won a parliamentary vote to become Japan's first female prime minister.
The Nikkei 225 edged up 0.27%, or 130.56 points, to end at 49,316.06.
Takaichi's appointment marks a historic breakthrough for women in Japanese politics, though she now faces challenges from inflation, security tensions, and political instability.
She is expected to unveil her cabinet later Tuesday and prepare for upcoming diplomatic engagements, including a possible visit from U.S. President Donald Trump next week.
Since taking charge of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party two weeks ago, Takaichi ended its long alliance with Komeito and forged a new partnership with the Japan Innovation Party. Despite Ishin's backing securing her premiership, the coalition remains two seats short of a lower-house majority, complicating her path to passing key legislation.
In corporate developments, Sawai Group, which closed flat, said its unit Sawai Pharmaceutical settled a patent dispute with Asahi Kasei Pharmaover osteoporosis drug Teriparatide, paying 4 billion yen to resolve all claims after an Osaka court ruling against it earlier this year. Kasei Pharma's shares rose 0.3%.
Oxide, which closed 5.5% lower, maintained its full-year outlook, expecting second-half earnings recovery from improved performance at Israeli unit Raicol and stronger semiconductor demand. It also reported advances in silicon carbide wafer and thin-film lithium niobate development under Japan's NEDO program.
Taiwan's Yageocompleted its tender offer for Shibaura Electronics, which shed 0.1%, securing an 87.3% stake in Japan's top NTC thermistor maker in what is seen as the first successful unsolicited foreign takeover of a major Japanese firm. Yageo plans full ownership and delisting by early 2026.
