The Australian sharemarket was flat on Friday after declines in the consumer discretionary sector offset sharp gains in gold miners after the precious metal rallied following a run of declines in the commodity price.
The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped 3.6 points, less than 0.1 per cent to 8881.9 at the closing bell, with four out of the 11 sectors in the red. The index notched 1.7 per cent decline over the week.
